Transnational study of the training needs of teachers and students on prevention and response to the emergencies most likely to occur in EU schools

The partners of the e-PPR project have carried out a transnational study to identify teachers and students’ needs regarding training on response to the emergencies most likely to occur in schools. In total, 677 school teachers from six EU countries (Denmark, Estonia, Romania, United Kingdom, Spain and Lithuania) have participated in this study.

Results showed that 22.36% of the teachers and 33.37% of the students have not been trained at all. For 41.46% of the teachers and 47.19% of the students who were trained, the training was “not enough” because it was mostly limited to evacuation in case of fire (87.75% teachers, 94.18% students) and it was too short (less than 3 hours for 62.53% of the teachers, and less than 1 hour for 58.43% of the students). The topics on which more training is required are: first aid, fire, terrorist threat, earthquake and toxic cloud.

The specific questions asked to the teachers and their answers were:
  • Have you been trained on prevention and response to the emergencies most likely to occur in your school (e.g. fire, terrorist threat, flooding, toxic cloud, serious injury, etc.)?: Yes (77.64%), No (22.36%).
  • If so, please tick in the list below what you have been trained on: evacuation in case of fire (87.75%), first aid (84.58%), terrorist threat (21.28%), flooding (6.15%), earthquake (8.03%), toxic cloud (13.78%).
  • How long was the training?: less than one hour (14.35%), between one and three hours (48.18%), more than three hours (37.47%).
  • How would you rate the training?: excellent (7.43%), good (31.08%), enough (20.03%), not enough (41.46%).
  • Have your school’s students been trained on prevention and response to the emergencies most likely to occur in your school (e.g. fire, terrorist threat, flooding, toxic cloud, serious injury, etc.)?: Yes (66.63%), No (33.37%).
  • If so, please tick in the list below what they have been trained on: evacuation in case of fire  (94.18%), first aid (22.23%), terrorist threat (6.2%), flooding (3.6%), earthquake (8.98%), toxic cloud (9.58%).
  • How long was the training of the students?: less than one hour (58.43%), between one and three hours (41.57%), more than three hours (0.00%).
  • How would you rate the training of the students?: excellent (6.4%), good (29.58%), enough (16.83%), not enough (47.19%).
